A Parkinson Wellness Recovery programme from the Exercise4BrainChange model
Exercise4BrainChange techniques are derived from scientific researches on 'HOW TO' exercise for brain repair and neuroplasticity. This system was developed by Dr. Becky Farley, a physical therapist, neuroscientist, and Parkinson exercise expert. She received a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Arizona, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Physical Therapy from the University of Oklahoma.
The Exercise4BrainChange techniques use high physical effort, cognitive engagement, attentional focus, and emotional engagement to treat both the motor and non-motor symptoms of PD. The framework for the techniques, called the Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!), can be applied to help people with Parkinson Disease put off and reduce symptoms, decrease fall risk, and to improve quality of life.
The PWR!Moves programme starts at diagnosis with a PWR!Certified Therapist. PWR!Moves retrain skilled movement, and can be done in any position. It includes a combination of individual therapy and group classes. A PWR!Certified Therapist is trained to develop and prescribe comprehensive Exercise4BrainChange programmes to address multiple symptoms and personalized goals for all levels of disease severity, fitness and co-morbidities.
